WHY I MADE THIS COSTUME
I like to joke that Courage the Cowardly Dog is my spirit animal. As a child (like everyone else who grew up watching old-school Cartoon Network), this show was absolutely traumatizing. As an adult, the show comes across as more trippy than scary, though still quite disturbing on many levels. Courage is quite an admirable character, because even though he is constantly traumatized and frightened, in the end, he (to put it quite crudely) gets s*** done, and saves his loved ones. It’s very brave of him to do the right things despite his fears.

HOW I MADE THIS COSTUME
The dress was sewn out of a stretch lavender fabric that was given to me by a fellow cosplayer who was going to trash it if no one took the fabric. The dress and capelet were patterned by myself, and I used a soft lavender faux fur from Joann’s. I cut scrap white fabric for the eyes, and hand-embroidered the pupils and the outline of the eyes, and sewed on the nose and ears to complete Courage’s distinct appearance. The capelet is fully lined with a purple liner fabric as well.

THOUGHTS ON THIS COSTUME
Because I like to go all-out with all my previous cosplays, I wanted something more comfortable for days when I want to be casual but still cosplay. Designing the Gijinka Courage the Cowardly Dog was very fun for me, and I was really pleased when people came up to me saying that they’ve “never seen a lolita Courage the Cowardly Dog” and tell me that I bring back childhood nostalgia.
